Free Things To Do With Kids This Summer in the East Valley

Okay honestly… summer in Arizona with kids feels a little personal sometimes.

Like why is it 114 degrees before lunch?
Why are my kids hungry every 14 minutes?
And why does every “fun family outing” somehow turn into spending $87 on snacks and drinks?

So I started putting together a list of actually FREE things to do around the East Valley this summer because we needed options that didn’t involve spending a small fortune every weekend.

And honestly… Arizona has way more free stuff than I realized.

If you’re in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Queen Creek, Tempe, or nearby, here’s a giant list of places and activities worth checking out this summer.

Splash Pads That Will Save Your Sanity

Let’s just start with the obvious because honestly… splash pads are carrying parents during Arizona summers.

Eastmark Great Park Splash Pad – Mesa

This one is probably our favorite right now.

Huge splash area.
Big grass area.
Playgrounds.
Room for kids to just absolutely exhaust themselves while you sit there pretending this counts as self care.

Go early if you can because it definitely gets busy.

Gilbert Regional Park

This place is honestly incredible for kids.

Splash pad, giant playgrounds, walking paths, shaded areas… it’s one of those parks where your kids somehow stay entertained for hours.

Which honestly feels illegal for something free.

Mansel Carter Oasis Park – Queen Creek

Smaller but really good for younger kids.
Usually a little calmer too which sometimes is exactly what you need.

Desert Breeze Park – Chandler

Good splash area and honestly just a really solid park overall.

Especially for those “we need OUT of the house immediately” afternoons.

Libraries Are Quietly Winning Summer

I know.
I know.

When someone says “library” you probably picture trying to keep your kids quiet for 20 stressful minutes.

But the East Valley libraries during summer are honestly amazing.

They have:

  • crafts

  • free events

  • reading programs

  • LEGO activities

  • STEM stuff

  • movie days

  • air conditioning

Honestly the air conditioning alone deserves an award.

Mesa Public Library

Mesa libraries do a really good job with summer activities.

And they rotate events constantly so there’s usually always something happening.

Chandler Public Library

Their summer programs are surprisingly good.
Especially for elementary-age kids.

Also… if you haven’t done a library scavenger hunt with younger kids yet, it weirdly works.

Tempe Public Library

Probably one of the best indoor “let’s escape the heat before we all lose our minds” options.

Parks & Outdoor Stuff

Now obviously… outdoor activities in Arizona during summer have a VERY specific time limit before everyone starts melting.

But if you go early morning or later in the evening, there’s actually a lot to do.

Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch – Gilbert

Okay this place is honestly underrated.

Walking trails.
Ducks.
Fishing spots.
Birds everywhere.
Open space for kids to run around.

And somehow it feels peaceful even with children screaming in the distance.

Usery Mountain Regional Park – Mesa

If your family likes hiking at all, this is a good one.

Just go EARLY.
Like “questioning your life choices at 6am” early.

The nature center is fun for kids too and they sometimes have ranger programs during summer.

Freestone Park – Gilbert

This is one of those classic East Valley parks everyone ends up at eventually.

Playgrounds.
Lakes.
Ducks.
Wide open grass areas.

Honestly great for simple picnic nights.

Free Museums & Indoor Places

Because eventually… everybody needs a break from the heat.

Chandler Museum

This one surprised us.

It’s free and actually really well done for kids.
They usually have rotating exhibits and scavenger hunts too.

And best of all:
inside.
with AC.

Tempe History Museum

Another solid free indoor option.

Especially if your kids are at the age where they ask 400 questions about everything.

ASU Art Museum

This one depends on your kids obviously…
but if they’re creative at all they’ll probably enjoy it.

Free Summer Events Worth Watching For

A lot of East Valley cities quietly host free family events all summer long and honestly most people miss them.

Things like:

  • movie nights in the park

  • splash pad events

  • pool parties

  • library festivals

  • craft days

  • little city community events

A few worth checking:

  • Gilbert H2O Fest

  • Queen Creek Pool-a-Palooza

  • Chandler summer movie nights

  • Mesa family park events

Most cities post them on their Parks & Recreation pages.

Honestly… The Best Strategy Is Rotating Stuff

I think the mistake a lot of us make during summer is feeling like we need to plan these huge expensive outings constantly.

But honestly?
Kids are usually just happy doing simple stuff consistently.

Some of our best summer days end up being:

  • splash pad in the morning

  • lunch at home

  • library in the afternoon

  • park after sunset

Simple.
Cheap.
Everybody survives.

Mostly.

A Few Random Free Things Kids Weirdly Love

Not even kidding:

  • walking around Bass Pro Shops

  • looking at fish tanks in pet stores

  • IKEA

  • Home Depot kids workshops

  • Lowe’s kids workshops

  • ducks at the park

  • free movie nights

Children are honestly so random.

Final Thoughts

Arizona summers are intense enough already.

And trying to entertain kids for 2-3 months without spending a fortune honestly feels impossible sometimes.

But the East Valley actually has a ton of good free options if you know where to look.

Hopefully this helps another parent survive summer break a little easier.

And if you know another free East Valley spot that should be added to the list… send it to me because we are all trying to make it through this together.
